Resumo: No capítulo CCXIII de Peregrinação, Fernão Mendes Pinto faz uma apresentação da doutrina budista, por intermédio da personagem de um «bonzo», um monge zen budista japonês. Se bem que sucinta e fragmentária esta apresentação é a primeira no género, na Europa. No contexto da grande literatura de viagem europeia é a primeira vez que a doutrina budista é assim apresentada a um público geral. Certos aspetos da doutrina budista passam por este meio a ser comunicados a um público alargado, a partir de 1614 com a publicação de Peregrinação, e o universo dos leitores que primeiro recebem esta informação é, logicamente, o universo dos leitores de língua portuguesa. Pode-se assim afirmar que, pelo menos desde a publicação de Peregrinação, o público literário europeu, em geral, passa a ter uma notificação do que seja a doutrina budista.

This article promotes a cultural-comparative approach relating the myth of Shambhala and the myth of Prester John. The article accounts for the magnetizing impact of Prester John‘s myth upon the dynamics that led to the globalization of trade networks worldwide. It then explains how these entwinements of networks led to introduction of the word Shambhala (spelt “Xembala”), for the first time, in a literary text in a European language, Portuguese, written in Tibet in the XVII century. The article discusses how these dynamics are reflected in major works of Portuguese literature (Lusíadas, Peregrinação). It then inflects a transcultural thematical revision of both myths from a vantage point of cultural otherness: the explanations given by contemporary authors in the Buddhist Tibetan tradition (Dalai Lama, Chögyam Trungpa) on the notions of “pure land” and of “warriorship”. Finally, it debates how both mythologies are entwined with the geography and cultures of Central-Asia, looking into military history (the battle of Qatuan, 1141) and foremost the presence, the circulation and the impact of the sacral-martial typology upon central Asian cultural traditions.

Resumo: Neste artigo procedemos a uma abordagem cultural-comparativa relacionando o mito de Shambhala com o mito do Prestes João das Índias. Demonstramos o impacto magnetizador deste último nos processos que conduziram à globalização das redes de transações à escala mundial. Demonstramos também como esses entrelaçamentos de redes levaram a que a palavra Shambhala (grafada "Xembala") aparecesse pela primeira vez, num texto literário numa língua europeia, o português, ainda no século XVII (escrito no Tibete). Discutimos como estes processos se espelham em obras maiores da literatura portuguesa (Lusíadas, Peregrinação). Procedemos a uma revisão temática transcultural da estruturação de ambos mitos, a partir de explicações conferidas por destacados autores contemporâneos da cultura budista tibetana (Dalai Lama, Chögyam Trungpa) em torno das noções de "terra pura" e de "marcialidade". Constatamos finalmente a consonância cultural e geográfica entre ambas tradições mitológicas, tanto por reflexos na história militar centro-asiática (batalha de Qatuan, 1141) quanto, sobretudo, pela consistência ente a tipologia sacro-marcial de ambos mitos e presença, a circulação e o impacto da tipologia sacro-marcial nas culturas do espaço centro-asiático. This article presents a theoretical reflection on the contemplative approach to higher education. Starting by considering ancient philosophical traditions, in what regards the education, and the transformation of the self we move on to a reflection on the positive impact of the burst of science, in modernity, and simultaneously the darkening side effects of disregarding other paths towards knowledge, much valued until then, such as the case of the contemplative practices. We draw attention towards the uncontrived necessity of opening a new paradigmatic horizon in the conceptualization of the “human”, which is vigorously propelling the so‑called Contemplative Turn, now with the sound support of science itself. We develop the idea that higher education shall not discard the contemplative pedagogy, taking into account the essence of the concepts of education and universitas, which necessarily comprehend and address, not only the personal development in terms of instruction and technical expertise, but also the wholeness of the human being, in terms of balance, righteousness and self‑acknowledgement. We therefore propose that the contemplative approaches will enable to overcome the dominant stage of objectified consciousness, promoting a genuinely relational form of knowledge. Thereupon, we present a short account on the contemplative education movement, and we summarize the main results of its applicability to higher education programs.

Following the Second Intermediate Period, the traditional Egyptian relationship with Syria-Palestine has considerably changed. After a first momentum of raids and razzia which broadly characterized the early 18th dynasty ‘policy’ in the region, it is during the mid-18th dynasty that one can observe some indications for an aim to a more effective control.  In this context, it is possible to identify individuals who were involved with the missions abroad and from whom interesting information about their presence beyond the borders of Egypt is available.
This paper aims to present the research questions and methodological approach used in the dissertation submitted for my master degree in Egyptology at the University of Liverpool which focuses on studying the effect of favour and empowerment of officials who had performed tasks in the Levant between the reigns of Thutmose III (c.1479-c.1425 B.C.) and Amenhotep II (c. 1426 -1400 B.C). This will hopefully demonstrate both the limits and possibilities of studying such a specific dynamic taking into account scholarship, theoretical approaches and archaeological remains.

The extensive reference to the theme of travels between worlds, present in the majority of the ancient traditions and particularly in the Ancient Near East and Greco-Latin cultures, denounces the existence of common human conceptions - which experience a long evolution of several mythical and religious visions - in the constant human search for answers concerning its existence, in this and the other-world.
If the "terms catabasis and anabasis, to be thorough, should be applied only to the travels to hell percussed by the heroes of the Greco-Latin tradition, they designate after all, lato sensu, by the notorious pre and post existence of the theme, all the travels between worlds before and after this same tradition".
Thus, if initially these transits were confined to the gods and the defuncts, they become, with the Greek Man, spearheaded almost exclusively by the hero-man. This opening to man of the inferior space, who there descends and from there ascends alive, will lead the soul, a posteriori, to the eschatological catabatic and anabatic journey. Therefore, if the initial transits aimed, somehow, to provide the oncoming of the gods towards Man and his world, the evolution of the vision concerning this theme will lead Man, finally, up to the divinity.

A abundante referência ao tema das viagens entre mundos presente na maioria das tradições antigas e em particular nas culturas do Próximo Oriente Antigo e Greco-latina, denuncia a existência de concepções humanas comuns - que atravessam uma longa evolução de visões míticas e tradições religiosas diversas - na permanente busca do Homem por respostas acerca da sua existência, neste e no outro-mundo.
Se os termos catábase e a anábase, "em rigor, deveriam ser aplicados apenas às viagens percorridas aos infernos pelos heróis da tradição Greco-latina, eles designam afinal, lato sensu, pela notória pré e pós existência deste tema, todos os trânsitos percorridos entre mundos antes e depois desta tradição".
      Assim, se inicialmente estes trânsitos se limitavam aos deuses e aos defuntos, eles passam a ser, com o Homem grego, protagonizados quase exclusivamente pelo homem-herói. Esta abertura do espaço inferior ao homem, que aí desce a daí regressa com vida, conduzirá posteriormente a alma, agora separada do corpo, à viagem escatológica catabática e anabática. Deste modo, se os trânsitos iniciais visavam, de algum modo, aproximar as divindades do Homem e do seu mundo, a evolução do tratamento deste tema conduzirá, por fim, o Homem até à divindade.
